I salute you Anand Kumar Sir……. A formula for success

Mathematician Anand Kumar who trains underprivileged students for free and helps them enter IITs People magazine of the Time magazine group carries, in its  one of  the Indian editions, a detailed feature on the work of Anand Kumar, listing him as a "People's Hero". The magazine usually features celebrities and film stars. This is a rare occasion when a teacher has been profiled.   The People magazine feature details how Anand Kumar's  working almost alone for over a decade, has helped many children from poor families to make it into the prestigious IITs. "It feels great to find a place in People. It will inspire me work even harder. I am not a celebrity. I am just an ordinary man, but this is a great gesture from the magazine, to find me good enough for this honour. This is a recognition of the students, my teachers and family members, as without them it would not have been possible," Kumar said. Kumar had hoped to study at Cambridge University in Britain, but when acute financial problems saw him giving up that dream, he set up Super 30 to help poor students, providing free residential coaching. In 1992, Kumar began teaching Mathematics. He rented a classroom for Rs 500 a month, and began his own institute, the Ramanujam School of Mathematics (RSM). Within the space of year, his class grew from two students to thirty-six, and after three years there were almost 500 students enrolled. Then in early 2000, when a poor student came to him seeking coaching for IIT-JEE, who couldn't afford the annual admission fee due to poverty, Kumar was motivated to start the Super 30 programme in 2003, for which he is now well-known.

Every year in August, since 2003, the Ramanujan School of Mathematics, now a trust, holds a competitive test to select 30 students for the 'Super 30' scheme. About 4,000 to 5,000 students appear at the test, and eventually he takes thirty intelligent students from economically backward sections, tutors them, and provides study materials and lodging for a year. ). He also provides them food and a place to stay. Money earned through maths tuitions given to students from financially stable families under the banner of 'Ramanujam School of Mathematics' that Anand founded in 1992 enables Super 30 meet its expenses. He prepares the students for the Joint Entrance Examination for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). His mother, Jayanti Devi, cooks for the students, and his brother Pranav Kumar takes care of the management.
Anand Kumar has no financial support for Super 30 from any government as well as private agencies, and manages on the tuition fee he earns from the Ramanujam Institute . After the success of Super 30 and its growing popularity, he got many offers from the private – both national and international companies - as well as the government for financial help, but he always refused it. He wanted to sustain Super 30 through his own efforts.
Despite recognition of his work from various quarters — including U.S. President Barack Obama's office, Time and Newsweek magazines and the Bihar Government — Anand remains humble. There is no sign of vanity in his attire. Many of the students who have benefitted from Super 30 offer him help. A Rotarian who has been following Anand's growth over the years, says, "Anand always says, 'Thank You. I'll take your help, when needed.' But, he never gets back to them." Having to take maths as well as counselling classes for the students, Anand is busy throughout the day. "These students need counselling and pep talk. They come from very poor families, and are low on confidence. We have to constantly inject into them the belief that they can rise as high as anybody else." Anand and his innovative school have earlier featured in international magazines and on TV news channels. Time magazine has earlier described Super 30 as the "best of Asia", while Newsweek had listed the school as one of the world's four innovative schools. Europe's Focus magazine paid tribute to Kumar's ability to unleash hidden talent, while London's Monocle listed him among the 20 top teachers of the world. Discovery Channel, which made an hour-long documentary on Anand Kumar and Super 30, described it as a "revolutionary experiment to bring about social change", while Yoichi Itoh, chief economist of STB Research Institute, Japan, which also made a film on "Super 30" for Japan's NHK channel, dubbed it a "secret weapon of India". *~**~*~*~*~~*~*~*~*~~*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~* Words of Anand Kumar Sir. |
