My friend recently had a sordid experience with one of the petrol pumps in Mumbai. She fueled her car and handed her credit card to the DSM, who took it to the sales room for swiping. After receiving it back, as she was driving back hhome, she got a phone call from her husband (who gets intimation on mobile from bank on every transaction of the joint credit card) that Rs.65000/- had been debited to some shopping mall in South Africa. He immediately got the card blocked by the bank. Further, after providing the bank with all the proofs that neither he nor his wife had been to the shopping mall in South Africa on that day, the bank credited the amount back to his account, bearing the loss on the bank itself. The fact that my friend had not used the credit card on that day anywhere else but at the petrol pump, she believes that her card was duplicated at the petrol pump. There are devices to swipe and send the card in digital form to any far off countries, and convert it back in to magnetic scrip that can be swiped there at a local Shopping mall .
